How Can I Make My Child’s Room Seem Bigger?

A small room can be a bit of a let down for some people, especially if your children’s friends have larger bedrooms. However, that doesn’t mean that they cannot enjoy their space. While you may not be able to physically enlarge the room, there are steps you can take to maximise the space, as well as to make the room look bigger than it actually is. In addition to this, it can also be a good idea to instil a sense of gratitude in your child, so that they appreciate the things they DO have in life.

Change the Bed

A different type of bed might make a big difference to the overall look and feel of the room. Rather than using a typical bed frame, that leaves room for not a lot else, you may want to think about how a kids highsleeper bed could benefit your child. Not only can this be an exciting means of sleeping for your child, but it will also free up some storage opportunities. You could instead keep your child’s chest of drawers under the bed itself, or even opt for one with wardrobe and drawers built in, which will grant you extra space elsewhere in the room. You could also invest in something like these wicker baskets to store under the bed, and designate each basket for a particular thing (toys, games, etc).

Reflect Light

Finding ways to reflect more light in a room can give it a bigger feel. There are certain types of white paint that, alongside increasing the perception of space, can also help a room feel cooler, which can be ideal in the summer months. If your child feels that white is too much of a bland colour, there are other options they can consider. Firstly, they could instead choose a pastel hue of a different colour, which will still allow for this reflection, albeit potentially not as much, but in a shade that they will love. Secondly, you could come to a compromise that the white paint is used, however they may also have a feature wall, or hang pictures or posters of their choosing. It is important that, when trying to increase the perceived size of the room, you still factor in some of your child’s choices, as they are the ones who will need to spend time in this space.

Open the Curtains

There are a number of benefits that natural light can bring to your child. Firstly, it can help to make the room appear less contained, giving an illusion of space. On top of this, research has found that exposure to natural light can help the body to produce Vitamin D, aid with mental health, and even help a person’s body clock to function properly, allowing them to wake and sleep appropriately. Alongside this, the use of natural light will also help to cut down on your electricity bill.

By considering the current furnishings and design of your child’s room, as well as the funds you have available, you may be able to create a wonderful living space that your child will be proud to call their own.
